BODY WORLDS IS CLOSED. The BODY WORLDS exhibition at the Experimentarium is an outstanding opportunity to see inside your body. You will see real human bodies at very close quarters, learn about the incredible complexity of the human body and see precisely how lifestyle choices can make their mark on the body.
The human body is an excellent design. It is the result of 3.8 billion years of evolution. It is finely tuned and perfectly adapted for survival and performance. Thousands of tiny, clever and ingeniously designed details interact in the complex organism that is your body.
The BODY WORLDS exhibition allows you to study the body in great detail.
On the surface, we human beings are different, and society now focuses more than ever on the visible differences between us. Under the surface however, we are all surprisingly alike. One important objective of the BODY WORLDS exhibition is to invite us to examine the body, learn how it works and realise how much we have in common.
BODY WORLDS exhibits real human bodies. The bodies were donated to a donor programme set up by Dr. Gunther von Hagens and the Institute for Plastination in 1983. The donors donated their bodies specifically for use in the unique BODY WORLD’S exhibitions.
Each body in the exhibition is here for a specific purpose, e.g. to show how the brain and muscles work together when we move or the location of our internal organs.
Since the first exhibition in Japan in 1995, more than 47 million children and adults have visited BODY WORLDS.
At the Experimentarium’s version of BODY WORLDS, you can see more than 100 plastinated bodies.
The bodies in the BODY WORLDS exhibition are preserved down to the tiniest muscle, tendon and blood vessel. A special technique called plastination, devised by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977, makes it possible to achieve an astonishing degree of detail. In a vacuum, the body’s cells are filled with a polymer material. The process leaves all the body’s details intact.
First and foremost, BODY WORLDS examines the healthy, normal human body. However, the exhibition also shows how our lifestyle can affect our body. It shows examples of how the body is impacted by wear and tear, and ageing.
The BODY WORLDS exhibition takes a very candid look at your fascinating body, uncovers some of its mysteries, and shows you how lifestyle choices can make their mark on it.
