Takeoff to the future?

Takeoff to the Future?

Takeoff to the Future? is an interactive exhibition designed by Experimentarium specifically for passengers in Copenhagen Airport. It explores technologies that might make air travel less harmful to our climate.

It’s hard to imagine a world, where we don’t fly! But we also can’t imagine a world where air traffic continues to emit CO2 at the level we see today.

Future air traffic must be less harmful to the climate, and the development of fossil-free aviation fuels is indeed underway.

“Takeoff to the Future?” is an interactive exhibition developed by Experimentarium, that explores some of the technologies that might make that important change possible.

The exhibition includes five hands-on activities and a digital universe with games and competitions expanding on the physical experience.

It is a fun, hands-on glimpse into the future. But it is not a crystal ball. The technologies, like Power-to-X and fuels made from organic waste, might or might not be part of the solution. But they are, in this moment of time, very promising technologies that might take us at least some of the way. This is why the title “Takeoff to the Future?” has a question mark in it.

Developed in cooperation with Copenhagen Airport

The setting is Copenhagen Airport – the fourth-busiest airport in Northern Europe, and the busiest for international travel in Scandinavia, serving close to 30 million passengers yearly.

Experimentarium was approached by Copenhagen Airport. They wanted to fill a commercial space between terminals with an activity that could make the experience in the airport more enjoyable for passengers – especially families.

In cooperation we settled on the theme and Experimentarium got to work researching, developing and producing the activities and the visual concept that would combine into an attractive, playful, educational and indeed durable exhibition.

The exhibition was made possible through the generous support of Danish foundations: Agustinus Fonden, Otto Mønsteds Fond and Louis Petersens Legat, and it will remain in Copenhagen Airport for the next three years.

The most relevant time for “onboarding” new knowledge

The theme could easily have been something else, but for Copenhagen Airport this theme made it possible to open a conversation with passengers about the future of air travel.

For Experimentarium it was the opportunity to make this important knowledge available when it was most relevant – the exact moment where children and their adults would pose the questions and be open for knowing more.

Part of Experimentarium’s new strategy

As part of our new strategy for 2024-2028, Experimentarium wants to expand our reach to all of Denmark through digital and physical experiences and new, and exciting partnerships.

Through the partnership with Copenhagen Airports, we have created our first pop-up experience in one of our nation’s busiest places.

Here, 30 million passengers can make Experimentarium part of their experience at the airport. And we can show arriving tourists, why they should put a visit to Experimentarium on their itinerary.

The activities in “Takeoff to the Future?”

Air Under the Wings
Play with wind and lift. Give the small planes lift in the air column and try to make them soar to higher altitudes.

Power-to-X Plant
In this reaction game, you start a Power-to-X plant. Be quick to press the right buttons and capture energy from wind, sun, and water. Using energy from renewable sources, the Power-to-X plant produces hydrogen, which can be used to create fuels that are less harmful to the climate.

Energy Collector
This large tilting labyrinth is an interactive quiz game, where you must roll the ball through the right gates to collect energy. You get points when you make the least climate-impacting choices.

Takeoff
Take a closer look at air travel now and in the future. Choose where you’d like to fly on the large world map and see if you can reach your destination with the technologies, we have available today and those that may come soon. You’ll also learn what is required to get the development of new fuels and technologies “off the ground”.

Food for Thought
Dive deeper into the knowledge and issues that “Takeoff to the Future?” is based on. Learn about the technologies that can make air traffic less harming to our climate and what challenges must be solved along the way.

Takeoff Zone
Take “Takeoff to the Future?” with you. In the exhibition’s digital universe, you’ll find fun games based on the experiences in the exhibition.
